Food and water security to be ensured by production of agriculture and livestock breeding products in the region sufficiently
After hearing the reports, the Senior General said the purpose of implementation of agriculture and livestock breeding zones in Yangon Region is to ensure food and water security and to enable the public to consume food at cheaper prices. As Yangon has a population of about eight million and the demand for meat, fish, various eggs and vegetables is very huge, it is necessary to fulfill the needs as much as possible. It was found that other states and regions including Ayeyawady Region, Bago Region and Shan State are distributing meat, fish and eggs in Yangon Region. In addition to production costs, local residents have to buy food at high prices due to transportation costs incurred by distribution of goods from other states and regions in Yangon Region. Therefore, agriculture and livestock breeding zones are successfully implemented in Yangon Region. If daily food needs of Yangon can be produced in Yangon Region, Yangon Residents will be able to consume meat and fish abundantly at reasonable prices.
Efforts exerted to prevent high prices of basic foodstuffs
As the public has to buy and consume basic foodstuffs every day, the government has been exerting efforts to prevent high prices of basic foodstuffs. The government has prioritized the promotion of the economy of the state. Those who do not want to see stability and development of the country has created political crises by imposing economic sanctions and making efforts to increase prices of goods and to disrupt money circulation since the assumption of duties by the SAC. However, the government has been able to overcome the crises. It is necessary to carry out agriculture and livestock breeding tasks successfully to prevent high prices of foodstuffs. In doing so, priority should be given to boosting yields instead of expansion of agriculture and livestock breeding farms. It is important to utilize agricultural land beneficially and measures must be taken to utilize agricultural land fully. To supply meat, fish and eggs in Yangon Region sufficiently, livestock breeding tasks must be carried out systematically and crop yields must be boosted. Agriculture and livestock breeding farms must actually bring benefits for and contribute to food needs of the population of Yangon.
As agriculture and livestock breeding farms need animal feeds and fertilizer, it is necessary to produce animal feeds and natural fertilizer from raw materials available in the region. By producing animal feeds, their prices in the region will fall. Chicken eggs from Ayetharyar in Shan State (South) and duck eggs from Bago and Ayeyawady Region are transported to Yangon. It was found that selling prices were excessively raised disproportionately to transportation costs. Responsible officials are required to take action against selling foodstuffs at excessively higher prices than reasonable ones by greedy and selfish people. It is especially necessary to boost productivity in the region and to take measures to make goods outside the region available at cheaper prices so that Yangon residents will not bear the brunt of high commodity prices. The Yangon Region government is required to supply enough food for Yangon residents but the Tatmadaw will also offer assistance. It is necessary to ensure that tasks being carried out are actually beneficial for the country. Senior General makes inspection tours
